Megan and Kamal Abdic begin an affair

The Girl on the Train

Megan and Kamal Abdic’s affair begins inside a relationship meant to treat Megan’s panic attacks and insomnia. Attraction becomes secrecy, and secrecy becomes a source of power for Megan; Kamal’s professional restraint, meanwhile, does not prevent their boundary crossing or bring it to a clear end.

From Therapy to Attraction

Megan first meets Kamal when she arrives for an introductory session. He apologizes for keeping her waiting, and she feels soothed within minutes. His soft, low, slightly accented voice catches her attention, as do his hands; she imagines their touch on her body. The attraction is present before they have discussed anything substantial, giving the therapeutic encounter an intimate charge from the outset.

The session itself establishes a legitimate reason for treatment. Megan tells him about panic attacks, insomnia, and lying awake too frightened to sleep, though she is not ready to explain the problem in depth. He asks about drugs and alcohol; she alludes to other vices, then redirects the conversation to the gallery’s closure, her lack of direction, and the time she spends in her own thoughts. Kamal offers occasional prompts rather than much speech, but Megan wants to hear his voice enough to ask where he is from. His answer, Maidstone in Kent, is accompanied by a smile that acknowledges she was asking something more personal.

At home, Scott Hipwell asks how the appointment went and whether she liked the therapist. Megan gives an unenthusiastic answer rather than betray her interest. Scott also asks whether they talked about Ben, reflecting his belief that Megan’s troubles are bound up with her brother. The exchange places the new attraction within Megan’s marriage: she is already withholding from Scott, though the affair itself has not yet been disclosed to him.

The Secret Relationship Takes Shape

By the entry dated 13 October 2012, Megan describes having met Kamal at The Swan in Corly, where he had arranged a room. Her account makes clear that this is not a single impulsive encounter: she refers to having done it before and expects it will happen again. The pair must be careful because discovery would damage both their lives, and she specifically fears Scott’s reaction.

Megan recruits Tara to help cover her absence. She asks Tara to claim that Megan is with her if Scott calls, and to arrange for Megan to call him back. Tara agrees without asking where Megan is going or who she will meet. Her willingness gives Megan a practical screen for the affair, although there is no indication that Tara knows the actual plan.

After sex, Kamal wants to talk about Megan’s youth in Norwich. She has hinted at that past before, but now supplies details that she admits are fabricated. She finds the lying entertaining and doubts that Kamal believes most of what she says; she also suspects that he lies. Their encounter therefore involves more than concealment from Scott. Megan turns disclosure itself into a game, offering a story while keeping its truth out of reach.

Desire, Restraint, and Control

Afterward, Kamal watches Megan dress and tells her that it cannot happen again. Megan recognizes that they should stop, but believes they will continue and that he will not refuse her. She identifies having power over him as the most intoxicating part of the arrangement. That perception complicates any simple account of the affair as mutual romance: Megan experiences the relationship as a contest in which Kamal’s resistance heightens, rather than extinguishes, her sense of control.

In a later encounter after a therapy session, Megan asks Kamal to have a drink with her. He refuses, saying that it would not be appropriate. She follows him to his nearby flat, knocks at his door, and asks whether this is appropriate as she puts a hand behind his neck and kisses him. His response is an explicit plea for her to stop and an insistence that he cannot do this. Megan experiences the resulting push and pull between desire and restraint as exquisite, and wants to prolong the feeling rather than let it go.

The scene exposes the contradiction at the affair’s center. Kamal recognizes a boundary and voices it, while Megan deliberately crosses it; yet his refusal does not resolve the situation. The evidence shows his resistance and her renewed pursuit, not a settled agreement about what their relationship will become. Megan’s conviction that the affair will continue sits beside Kamal’s insistence that it must not, keeping the relationship suspended between repetition and refusal.

Secrecy and Narrative Significance

The affair is sustained by concealment on several levels: Megan hides her meetings from Scott, enlists Tara as an alibi, and invents details about her past for Kamal. The lies are not merely defensive explanations after the fact. Megan describes the fiction she tells Kamal as pleasurable, while her confidence that he will keep returning gives the secrecy an element of control. Meanwhile, Scott’s questions about therapy go unanswered in any meaningful detail.

Because Megan’s account gives access to her own reasoning, the affair is presented through the gap between what she knows should happen and what she expects will happen. She acknowledges the risk, Kamal’s warning, and the need to stop, but still anticipates another encounter. The episode thus establishes both the breach of the therapeutic boundary and Megan’s investment in the power she believes it gives her. It does not offer a reconciliation or a stable romantic outcome; instead, it leaves the affair as a concealed, recurring conflict shaped by attraction, evasion, and resistance.
